Our family owes much to the Downe

CRITICAL care, employment, accidents and birth — one Kilclief family had more reasons than most to show their support for the Downe Hospital on Saturday.

For farming couple Jude and Deborah Sharvin, the Downe Hospital that has been both life-saving and life-giving.

Not only have two immediate family members been saved by the Downe, their second child Ryan was also dubbed “Baby 11” when he was one of the first babies born in its midwife-led unit in June 2010.

As a theatre secretary in the hospital for the past 15 years, Deborah also appreciates first hand the employment opportunities it offers.

She said they are also particularly grateful for the care Jude’s critically ill father is currently receiving as an in-patient.

“We have many reasons to be here today,” she said.

“My uncle was saved by the Downe, as was my brother following a faming accident four years ago. It is also where I had my second baby shortly after the midwife unit opened.

“This is a hospital for local people that provide good care and early diagnostics. It provides local jobs and is a lifeline for rural families.”
