Oscar nomination for film celebrating Coney Island

25 January 2012 - by CIARA COLHOUN

A SHORT film made in Coney Island has been nominated for an Oscar.

The Shore, written, directed and produced by Coney Island man and Oscar-nominated director Terry George, is one of the movies selected in the best short film category.

Starring Ciaran Hinds, The Shore tells the story of a man who emigrated to America 25 years ago to escape the Troubles and is now bringing his daughter back to meet his childhood friends.

The 30-minute film was shot entirely in Northern Ireland on location in Killough two summers ago and its premiere in March last year was attended by Hollywood stars who mingled with many of the local extras on the red carpet.

Ciaran Hinds said the film was a “lovely story about reconciliation and people reconnecting”.

The 84th annual Academy Awards will take place on 26 February at the Kodak Theatre in Los Angeles, hosted by Billy Crystal.
