Oil buying projects could lead to savings for local households

Oil buying projects could lead to savings for local households

10 June 2015

TWO new oil buying initiatives, which could save house holders money, have been launched in Downpatrick and Ardglass.

Under the new projects home heating oil would bought in bulk and the savings would be passed on to the householders who join the new clubs.

The schemes have been launched by County Down Rural Community Network (CDRCN), Bryson House and Downpatrick Credit Union along with local community volunteers.

The management committees are working in partnership with the agencies to help promote the scheme to provide an opportunity for all members to buy home heating oil while enjoying the savings and benefits the initiative will provide.

The initiatives are free to join and it is the managers of the initiatives who will negotiate the best price from a range of oil suppliers. House holders will be advised of the supplier, the price, the date of delivery and payment options available.

Similar schemes in Northern Ireland are saving their members between three and six pence per litre, so for a 500 litre delivery there could potentially be a saving of between £15 and £30. Savings could be substantially greater when compared to the cost of regularly using emergency 20 litre oil drums.

The organisers would like to encourage residents living within a five mile radius of either Downpatrick or Ardglass to register, as increased membership benefits everyone.

The first delivery in Downpatrick is due to take place on Friday, June 13. Anyone interested in becoming a member should sign up so they can be included in next month’s delivery. Please note, as a member, the requirement is to order at least once a year and the minimum order is 200 litres.

All members receive their oil at the same price per litre — whether you order 200 / 300 / 500 /900 litres.

Bryson House will contact members to take the oil order for the agreed delivery date and house holders will be contacted by the oil supplier to agree payment method such as cash, debit card, oil stamps, direct debit/standing order or a payment plan with the oil supplier.
