Nurses meet up again for reunion

12 June 2013

A ROYAL Victoria Hospital nurses reunion took place recently at the Slieve Donard Hotel.

The group of retired nurses began their training in January 1957. As well as local members, membership includes nurses now living South Africa, the U.S, Canada and the south of Ireland.

At their latest reunion, which now takes place every two years, 11 members got together in Newcastle.

One of the nurses, Mrs. Yvonne Hutton, said they enjoyed “reminiscing, laughing and crying” over their training days.

“Our training was hard, hours were long and discipline strict and we had to live in until qualified,” she said. “We had to be in our rooms for 10pm in the first year, 10.30pm in the second year and 11pm in the third year. “Late leave was once per month and permission had to be granted by Matron. Changed times.

“I think we all became different, better people for it and I hope each one has been a credit to RVH.

“Not all remained in nursing until they retired but their training helped their values wherever they diversified.”

Mrs. Hutton said their first reunion wasn’t until 1991 following a chance meeting between members at Gatwick airport.

“Two of us sadly could join us this time from England but were with us in spirit,” she added.
