Nursery heads make plea

THE principals of Downpatrick’s three nursery schools have met Down Council’s education committee to seek its support in light of changes faced by the pre-school sector.

The principals made a presentation to the committee on Thursday evening, outlining the pressures they are facing.

The town’s three nursery school principals have already highlighted the difficulties they face due to increasing reassure on places.

Downpatrick Nursery School, the Convent of Mercy Nursery School and St. Colmcille’s Nursery School had to turn away 30 children this year as demand for places soars.

As well as struggling to cater to the rising demand for places, principals have warned a review of provision for children from 0-6 years-old alongside a review of special needs provision is causing concern to both nursery teachers and parents.

Principal of the Convent of Mercy Nursery School, Miss Sinead Donoghue, said they hoped to secure the support of the council’s education committee so it could emphasise their issues at Stormont.

“We understand that there are financial pressures on all organisations now, but the situation for nurseries is a problem,” she said.

“We are really highlighting our concerns and warning that the pressure on the system will increase unless proper investment is made.”
