DOWNS Road residents in Newcastle have met again to highlight problems such as anti-social behaviour and illegal drinking.

The meeting with Down Policing and Community Safety Partnership (PCSP) was also attended by the PSNI and Down Council Enforcement Officers.

PCSP chairman Willie Clarke thanked the residents for attending and said he felt the PCSP had been proactive in tackling the problems in partnership with other agencies.

“I am pleased the residents of Downs Road, Newcastle, have taken the time to meet with us twice now and provide real and touching examples of how their lives have been negatively impacted on by problems such as anti-social behaviour and illegal drinking,” he said.

“In reply to queries from residents about the police response in the area Inspector Marty Trainor outlined the PSNI Nitelife Strategy, which includes work with licensees and interventions through the Neighbourhood Policing Teams.”

Mr. Clarke said Enforcement Officer, Eleanor McCartney, highlighted the impact of new legislation which means all dogs must be on a lead and the additional seasonal workers provided by the council to help tackle littering, illegal drinking and dog fouling.

PCSP Manager, Janine Hillen, said: “The PCSP Engagement Committee has only been up and running for just over two months and already we are incredibly busy. This shows the need for ongoing consultation with local residents we are pleased that communities have invited us to hear firsthand their concerns.

“We are subsequently encouraging any other groups or residents in the district who would like to meet with the PCSP to get in touch by telephone on 028 4461 0857 or via email pcsp@downdc.gov.uk.”
