Newcastle musicians succeed in all Ireland fleadh in Sligo

3 September 2014

THREE young members of Newcastle’s Comhaltas Ceoltoiri Eireann have returned from the all Ireland fleadh as medal winners.

Miadhachlughain O’Donnell won gold in the 12-15 flute slow air competition while siblings Niamh and Ruáirí Howell won bronze in the 15-18 duet.

They were part of a large group that travelled to the Sligo for the annual festival of Irish music, song and dance.

Newcastle Comhaltas is now preparing for a new season of lessons and events for anyone who would like to play a traditional musical instrument, speak Irish, sing traditionally or to set dance.

Registration sessions will be held in the Lodge Cultural Centre in Castlewellan on Thursday from 7pm-9pm, Saturday September from 10am to noon and next Thursday from 7pm-9pm.

Seniors and juniors are welcome although they must be primary three or above.

Instruments are available to hire.

New classes offered this year will include harp and junior set dancing.

Classes run weekly in the Lodge Castlewellan, on Thursdays from 4.15pm-9.30pm and again on Saturdays from 9.30am-12.30pm.
