Newcastle juniors have a great time

9 September 2015

NEWCASTLE Tennis Club’s junior tournament culminated in Finals Day last Friday, followed by the club’s annual barbecue.

In total, 63 local juniors entered and over 120 matches were played during ten days of play, in eleven different age and singles/doubles categories.

Congratulations to every junior who took part in the tournament and contributed to its success. Very well done to all who achieved prizes. The Tournament Cup for sporting behaviour was awarded to an extremely deserving Luka Hallissey.

Thanks go to Coach Sam Clegg for organising the tournament, ably supported by committee members Janet Flanigan and Rachel Corrigan. A special thank you goes to all the seniors who braved cold, windy and wet conditions in order to umpire the finals — Julieann Crawford, Gabrielle Burns, Mary McConville, Liz Brown, Lauren McAtamney, Simon Easton, Wendy Laffin, Paddy Dornan and John Lowry.

As the final matches of the tournament were played out, a sumptuous feast was provided to the fans, young and old, who had turned out to watch and support the juniors.

Thanks for the culinary delights go, in particular, to Loretta Lowry, Eugene McGuigan, Michael Doherty and Terry O’Reilly, with freshly-caught mackerel supplied by John Lowry. As usual, this event was a massive team effort, with lots of members contributing gorgeous grub to share.

It was a true pleasure to see the enthusiasm and excitement that all the juniors displayed for their club Tournament, playing their hearts out, sometimes several times a day, and coming along to spectate and support their friends too.

The club has an impressive pool of burgeoning talent, and with the tournament over, eyes now look forward to the hard training in the cold winter months that bears fruit in the league matches in the spring.
