Newcastle group in appeal to parents over Fairtrade eggs

27 March 2013

NEWCASTLE Fairtrade Group is encouraging people to ensure their Easter Eggs are made from fairly traded chocolate.

A Fairtrade egg contains certified cocoa, meaning that cocoa farmers in developing countries receive a fair price, plus an additional Fairtrade Premium to invest in community projects — giving them more control over their lives.

Gráinne Tobin of Newcastle Fairtrade Group said it is easier than ever to buy a Fairtrade Easter Egg and other chocolate by looking out for the distinctive Fairtrade logo on the packaging.

“Easter will taste better knowing that the cocoa farmers who have helped make your chocolate egg have been given a fair price for their produce,” she said.

Newcastle Fairtrade Group is campaigning to achieve Fairtrade status for the town, encouraging shoppers, retailers and cafés to buy and supply more Fairtrade products.

Shops, schools and churches across the seaside town have already pledged their support and the campaigners are hoping this Easter will be a bumper year for cocoa farmers in countries like Ghana.

Fairtrade seeks greater equity in international trade. It contributes to sustainable development by offering better trading conditions to, and securing the rights of, marginalised producers and workers.
