Newcastle gets ready to welcome shoppers to ‘unique’ local town

21 August 2013

BARGAIN hunters are being encouraged to visit Newcastle next month for the annual Newcastle Shopping Week.

The event, which runs from September 7-14, is being managed by Down Council and has been supported by the Department of Social Development.

Down Council Chairwoman, Maria McCarthy, said Newcastle is already a unique shopping town because of its location, nestling at the foot of the Mourne Mountains and on the Irish Sea coast.

“Newcastle Shopping Week aims to provide Newcastle with its own unique inventory of locally owned and operated businesses which are offering a range of fantastic deals and discounts at many of the shops and boutiques,” she said.

“Shopping week recognises the impact that local businesses can have on our local economy. Shopping at local businesses can help create more jobs and a more stable economy. If we can keep our money in our community, then the community benefits from it numerous times over.”

Newcastle businessman, Peter Law, said he is looking forward to another bumper week for the seaside town,

“Newcastle is filled with small and local businesses that reflect the unique passion and creativity of each owner,” said Mr. Law.

“”These businesses become the lifeblood of the local economy, catalysing local identity by having a vision for what’s possible and a plan of action to make things happen in our town.

“Newcastle businesses made every effort to ensure that local people and visitors alike enjoyed a rich cultural experience at the recent Festival of Flight and airshow which saw 125,000 people gather in the town centre last week.

“Our local businesses

contribute to building stronger connections with the communities where we operate and we ensure a positive economic future for Newcastle and for Down district.”
