Newcastle estate issues to be aired at meeting

17 April 2013

A MEETING is to be held to address a series of issues which have arisen at the Burrendale housing estate in Newcastle.

The meeting will be hosted by the Co. Down Community Network and will be attended by representatives from a number of statutory organisations including the Housing Executive, Roads Service, Down Council and representatives from the Murlough Community Association.

Councillor Willie Clarke, who has previously met with housing and community association officials, said a number of issues which have arisen at the Burrendale estate need to be addressed by statutory organisations.

He said concern has been expressed about a number of laneways at the rear of homes in the estate and several communal areas.

Councillor Clarke said recent fires at the Bracken Avenue area at the estate will be debated at the interagency meeting and believes there is a need to review the safety of people’s home heating oil tanks.

He continued: “I believe the forthcoming meeting will be very beneficial and build upon the excellent work that the Housing Executive has carried out at the Burrendale estate recently. This work included caging oil tanks and installing a number of alley gates.

“I believe that erecting additional gates would have a very positive impact in terms of negating anti-social behaviour and fly-tipping and would greatly help reduce crime as well.”

Councillor Clarke said he hopes the meeting will result in an action plan being devised to address the various issues of concern at the Burrendale estate.
