New tourism project is launched in Newcastle

3 June 2015

AN informative new visitor guide and art adventure trail have been officially launched in Newcastle.

Social Development Minister Mervyn Storey was in the resort last week to unveil the new initiative, a near £300,000 project funded by his government department and the former Down Council.

The visitor guide includes historical and heritage information as well as essential advice on various attractions, activities and eateries, while the adventure trail provides an interactive game involving specially commissioned art pieces.

Mr Storey said the new visitor guide is a “must have” for locals and visitors alike, explaining it provides information on all of Newcastle’s attractions, from accommodation to shopping.

“The guide is attractive and easy to use and lists events and activities to help people enjoy all that Newcastle and its surroundings has to offer,” he said.

““The new artwork, which includes a shell, a starfish and a jellyfish, make up an attractive and interactive adventure trail for families, locals and visitors to enjoy.”

The visitor guide and the adventure trail are part of a wider revitalisation scheme for Newcastle town centre to build upon the award winning promenade enhancements and public realm improvements which have already been completed.

Mr Storey commended local artist Alan Burke for designing and installing the wonderful art work, adding: “Using them as clues for an interactive family game is a very unique idea and will encourage children and young people to enjoy the promenade, adding to the atmosphere and vibrancy of this beautiful seaside town.”

While in Newcastle last week, the Stormont Minister took the opportunity to see at first hand the work undertaken within the town centre to improve buildings and derelict sites in the run up to the Irish Open which his department funded with a grant of £21,500.

Newry, Mourne and Down Council chairwoman, Naomi Bailie, said she was delighted to be associated with the launch of the new visitor guide and installation of public art on the promenade.

She continued: “Projects such as this, in particular, the design and distribution of the visitor guide, showcase what the area has to offer, whether you are simply there to absorb the stunning scenery or a fun-filled day out with the family. Newcastle has it all as a premier tourist destination.

“The seaside-themed public art trail is a perfect representation of the resort and I look forward to attracting increasing visitors and tourists to a revitalised Newcastle.”
