New bike for Christopher

New bike for Christopher

10 August 2016

ON Friday evening the Shimna Wheelers presented junior road racer Christopher Neill with a new set of racing wheels.

Over the past year Christopher has represented the Shimna Wheelers taking part in races all over Ireland every weekend. The club has been monitoring his continued progress and felt that his efforts were more than deserving of reward and recognition.

It is superb to have Christopher proudly flying the club colours in road races and also on the track in Belfast and Dublin.

Hopefully, these new wheels will give him added confidence to push that little bit faster in races.

A couple of weeks ago a group from the Shimna Wheelers donated blood at a Northern Ireland Blood Transfusion Service evening.

Club member Danny O’Boyle rallied the troops, urging them to man up and do something which could be potentially lifesaving for someone. Well done to all those who turned up to donate on the night.

Mickey Clarke and Jimmy ‘King’ McVeigh took part in one of the toughest mountain bike races in Ireland on Saturday. The race was set in the Cooley Mountains just outside Carlingford, County Louth.

The route covered approximately 52km of forest roads and trails and accumulated an energy sapping 5600 feet of elevation gain.

This taxing event proved to be no bother for our two hill climbing mountain bikers who blasted around the course, pushing themselves and their bikes to the limits.

Unfortunately, Jimmys’ cycling shoes started to speak to him during the race which proved quite troublesome. Initially, one of the lads said that he would never do the race again, but this was later retracted with an admission that he probably would enter the race again next year.

On Thursday night our beginners ‘Mocha’ road cycle group completed a 27 mile route going from Castlewellan to Rathfriland, Hilltown and home via Bryansford. The group contains a number of women and men who have recently taken up cycling and it is growing every week.

We welcome and encourage any new members who are thinking of taking up cycling and are keen to enjoy cycling in group with like minded individuals.
