A HEARTY band of brave souls celebrated the New Year in Strangford by taking the plunge.
Around 40 swimmers of all ages took part in the annual New Year’s Day swim in Strangford.
At 2.30pm precisely they dived into the icy waters and swam across the harbour.
It’s a daunting prospect at any time, but this year they had to contend with wild and blustery weather which added to the challenge.
Despite the conditions, nearly two thirds of the participants were only wearing swimming suits.
The youngest swimmer on the day was 10 year-old Finn McFaul, who was accompanied by his father, Declan.
The first swimmer out of the water was Bronagh McErlean from Strangford.
The event was organised by Caroline McErlean, of The Cuan in Strangford, who also took part.
“The excitement, anticipation and nervousness that surrounds this event is amazing,” she said.
“There is little chat among the swimmers as we stand looking into the water, but the babble of energised and animated voices at the other side is a complete contrast. Roll on New Year’s Day 2015.”
