SEAFORDE Motocross Park hosted a day of offroad racing with a difference on Saturday, when the Mourne Motorcycle Club staged the third round of the Quad, Sidecar, Veteran and U-23 Ulster Motocross Championship.
The day started with motocross when the Veterans class took to the line, with Temple man Richard Watt and Killyleagh’s Alan Magee fighting County Wicklow man Mark Mooney for the chequered flag.
In race one Watt led from the start to the chequered flag to take the win, with Magee taking second and Mooney coming home in third position. Watt started strongly again in races two and three, leading both races from the start until he was caught by Mooney towards the end of each race and the County Wicklow man won the final two races of the day, as Watt took two second placed finishes and Magee grabbed another two third placed finishes.
The Clubman’s Quad class were next on the line and Southern rider Kyle Murphy won all three races in impressive form. He was followed home by Killyleagh man Colin Lindsay with two fourths and a 12th position, Natasha Boyle from Carryduff in 15th, 18th and 13th and Leitrim man Jonathan Hilland took 9th and tenth placed finishes in the first two races before mechanical failure stopped him going to the line in race in three.
Next to the line was the Premier Quad class to offer some of the fastest racing on the day. In the first race Dean Colhoun from Saintfield took the lead at the halfway stage of the race and didn’t look back until he took the win.
In race two McLernon led from the start to take the win and then 6th in race three, as Rodgers took 16th in race two before winning race three and they were followed home by Cowan with two 3rd placed finishes, Colhoun in 4th and then a dnf in race three, as McQuaid came home in 7th and 5th positions.
The last class to the line was the U-23 Championship class, with County Down men fighting for honours. Loughbrickland brothers Jason and John Meara shared the honours in race one finishing in first and second, before Jason carried on his winning streak to take all three wins on the day, as John had a dnf in race two, before taking sixth in race three. Comber man Jason Garrett finished in 4th in race one before taking second placed finishes in races two and three, as Boardmills rider Chris Eccles kept up his chance of honours as the top Clubman in the race taking 15th, 11th and 12th placed finishes.
