More WWII bombs washed up on beaches in district

MORE Second World War munitions have washed ashore on local beaches.

Just over a week after a smoke mortar was found on Murlough beach, a controlled explosion was carried out on two mortars found near Tyrella beach on Monday night.

Walkers found the mortars on the beach between Tyrella and Ballykinlar and contacted the Coastguard. Members of South Down Coastguard team and the PSNI cordoned off part of the beach until the army bomb disposal team arrived and blew up the shells.

Coastguard watch manager Judith McNiece said: “We do get these sorts of things happening fairly regularly.

“There were quite a few dumps of World War Two munitions off our coastline and, particularly if you get some kind of stormy weather, you do tend to get these things coming up in certain locations.”

She said anyone who finds such objects should not try to move them in anyway, but phone the Coastguard or police.
