Moneyreagh group helps to launch charity initiative

7 October 2015

MONEYREAGH and District Action Cancer Group launched Northern Ireland’s October Breast Cancer Awareness month in Killyleagh last week.

The town’s Showgrounds — home of Killyleagh YC — was the venue for the launch which was marked with a bubble football event opened by Strangford MLA Michelle McIlveen.

The Breast Cancer Awareness theme is pink fundraising events, with the Moneyreagh Action

Cancer Group asking local shops, clubs and businesses in the area to support them by organising fundraising events throughout October.

All the money raised during the “paint the town pink” initiative will be used to support Action Cancer’s unique breast screening and awareness service and allow more women to use it.

The organisation screened more women than ever last year and is the only charity in Northern Ireland providing a free breast screening service for women aged between 40 and 49 and 70 and over.

In  2014/15, 10,000 women were screened at the charity’s Belfast headquarters and on its mobile detection unit known locally as the “big bus.” Charity officials say it was a record breaking year and want to beat that record over the next 12 months.

Organisers of the recent Bubble Football event in Killyleagh want to thank James Dowson of Bubble Football (07506 555009) who sponsored the evening and Killyleagh Football Club for  making it a very enjoyable evening for everyone.

Action Cancer’s big bus will be in Ballygowan on Friday, October 30 and again the following day. Screening appointments can be booked on line at www.actioncancer.org or telephone (028) 9080 3344.

The Moneyreagh and District Action Cancer Group will complete its fundraising campaign with a “pink party” in Gourley’s Lounge in Ballygowan on Saturday, October 24.
