Megahey holds his nerve to secure Martin Cup

8 February 2017

ST Michael’s C won the Martin Cup after a very close encounter against their club rivals, St Michael’s B.

There was no shortage of drama as the match went to the final pink in the last frame to decide the winner.

Conor Linten faced Gareth McKeever on table one while on the adjacent table Chris Reid faced Matt Fegan.

Conor started well and some nice scores together, but lady luck was on Gareth’s side and with the help of a few flukes he came out on top 69-59.

Matty was also making strides for victory in his frame as he took advantage of some of Reid’s errors to push the C team further ahead, Matt winning 71-56. After two frames the C team were 25 points in front.

Tommy McMenamin pulled 20 points back for the B team with a solid 67-47 win against Paul Megahey.

The second round of frames saw Gareth McKeever face Chris Reid and Gareth, still buoyed up with his earlier win, came out 18 in front, winning 73-55 putting the C team back in command.

Tommy faced Matt in an extraordinary fifth frame that had everything, especially when the match was coming to a finish.

With the scores virtually level, Matt had a 20-point lead with the blue, pink and black remaining, but he gave away as many points in fouls, allowing Tommy back into the frame.

After the last three balls were potted the frame finished 64 points apiece, leaving the C team 23 points  clear overall with one frame to play.

Conor faced Paul in the last frame, and with the handicap advantage the scores were virtually neck and neck.

As the frame progressed Conor found himself 16 points behind with three balls remaining and needing them all for victory.

Paul’s long pot on the blue resulted in the cue ball trickling into the corner pocket and keeping the hopes of the B team alive.

After a bout of safety play on the blue Conor created the first chance to win the match but he failed on his attempt with the rest and left the ball over the corner pocket.

After steadying himself for the winning pot Paul stepped up and slotted in the blue and pink to take the match.

This was the conclusion of a wonderful match and many thanks are extended to the St Michael’s club and all those in attendance for adding to the night.
