Mary hits the right note in New York opera competition

17 March 2021

DOWNPATRICK soprano Mary McCabe, who is starring in the Saint Patrick’s Show, has won an international opera competition in New York.

The online competition, conducted via zoom, was organised by NY International Opera Project (NYIOP) and was open to anyone with any background or age who could sing opera.

The NYIOP offers artists the opportunity to present themselves professionally at the highest level from anywhere in the world, whether by Zoom or live streamed audition.

The competition was anonymous and judges did not see the faces of the winners until after they judged their voices.

Mary  (31) was one of 15 winners and was delighted when she heard the news after several audition stages.

“It’s a wonderful idea to have singers judged solely on the merit of their singing without the distraction of a CV, photos or their reputation,” she said.

“I hope once we get back into theatres that this will open some more doors to me in the operative world.

“I really miss performing for live audiences and the warmth and energy that brings to every performance.”

The Saint Patrick show is premiering today and is available online at the Saint Patrick Centre
