HEAVY rain left one motorist trapped in his car on Finnebrogue Road outside

Downpatrick last weekend as flooding caused problems in several areas across the district.

Fire officers rescued the 38 year-old man from his car after it was swamped by up to three feet of water around Saturday lunchtime.

The driver was helped from his car without suffering any injury.

Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Group Commander William Johnston said: “Fire crews arrived and a male was trapped in his vehicle with the flood water around two to three feet deep.

“Roads closed due to flooding as weather warning still in place.

We were able to rescue the occupant from his vehicle without injury.”

Slieve Croob councillor Roisin Howell also reported that Department of Infrastructure workers were called out to clear gullies in the Annsborough Park and New Meadow Row in Annsborough and heavy surface water on the main road.

Heavy rain continued to cause problems as drivers had to navigate several badly flooded local roads, particularly between Saintfield and Carryduff.

A second yellow severe weather warning for rain and strong winds  in Down up until 11am yesterday had been issued by the Met Office.
