CALLS have been made to protect Struell Wells from litter louts.
SDLP MLA Colin McGrath and Downpatrick councillor John Trainor have urged the Department of communities to urgently undertake a security and facilities review of the Downpatrick tourist site.
“Many visitors and local people alike enjoy visiting these ancient wells,” said Mr McGrath. “It is an idyllic, peaceful location and it is a great spot for families to visit.
“However, due to its isolated location, it often attracts groups of teenagers and young people who camp out, set fires, consume alcohol and leave the place littered with bottles, cans and rubbish.
“We therefore call on the department to liaise with Newry, Mourne and Down Council and provide a clear facilities and security review that will ensure that the site is kept in a suitable condition for local people and visitors to our area.”
Councillor Trainor said: “Struell Wells has always been a popular site for tourists and locals alike. With the summer months being particularly busy with families picnicking and enjoying the beautiful surroundings and tourists coming to see one of the many unique, historic and spiritual sites in the area.
“There have been numerous incidents in the past and we have asked the PSNI to ensure that Struell Wells is patrolled in an effort to deter those who would misuse the site.
“I would ask those that have misused this beautiful area to be mindful that families and tourists frequent the site.”
