MP ‘positive’ after talks to get MRI scanner at Downe

13 June 2018

HEALTH officials are exploring all available funding opportunities to deliver a new MRI scanner at the Downe Hospital.

The confirmation came last week during a meeting between senior South Eastern Trust managers, South Down MP Chris Hazzard and Emma Rogan MLA at the organisation’s headquarters in Dundonald.

Top of the agenda was the drive to secure a new scanner — which takes detailed images of the inside of the body — with Mr Hazzard and Ms Rogan describing the meeting as “very positive.”

Mr Hazzard said he was “heartened” to hear Trust officials speak enthusiastically about the impact such a scanner would have on the Downpatrick hospital.

Local politicians and health campaigners have been arguing for the provision of the scanner which they are confident will not only help reduce the waiting list for diagnostic tests, but play a crucial role in helping sustain the future of the Downpatrick hospital.

In addition, campaigners say there is sufficient room in the building for the scanner and believe the specialist equipment could be used by local people and patients from outside the South Eastern Trust area.

Mr Hazzard said a new scanner would not only help enhance the operational capacity at the Downe, but would be a “life-changing development” for many local patients who are currently on lengthening waiting lists.

“The Trust is exploring all available funding opportunities to help deliver this equipment and I would again reiterate my call for the Department of Health to work with local health officials in order to find the resources required to make this opportunity a reality as soon as possible,” he added.

A number of issues were discussed last week, with Ms Rogan highlighting increasing suicide and mental health issues across South Down, stressing the importance of working collaboratively with the community in order to make a real impact.

“It is vital that the South Eastern Trust continues to develop health initiatives like the ‘healthier you’ programme that proactively works with community partners in improving health outcomes through pre-emptive coaching and social engagement.”
