MLA appeals for funding in blue-green economy

9 July 2025

A LOCAL Assemblyman has called for government investment in the so-called blue-green economy.

The appeal by South Down MLA Andy McMurray came after he met with representatives from the SeaSource organisation and officials from the Department for the Economy and DAERA to explore funding options.

Based in Kilkeel, SeaSource is a fishermen’s cooperative based driving diversification into the wider blue-green economy.

Mr McMurray said he has been supporting SeaSource and the wider blue-green economy for some time and is convinced this particular sector has “fantastic potential” for local fishing ports. “SeaSource is already making a success of this, but support is needed from the NI Executive,” he said.

“As the Republic of Ireland is investing into the sector, we must make sure that we don’t miss the boat.”

Mr McMurray said while fishing will always remain integral to the success of the local ports of Ardglass and Kilkeel, the unique skill set available in the sector is a huge asset for diversification.

“The blue-green economy is bringing many opportunities for education, training and good local jobs and is driving progress towards net zero,” he said.

“We need to take a cross-departmental approach to finding the necessary funding to support the green-blue sector. Going forward, I will be engaging with the Minister for Finance to push for additional budget allocations for green growth to help our blue-green economy flourish.”
