THE first round of the 2013 Irish Motocross Championship was held on Sunday, March 10, with County Down riders leading the way.

The event was held by the Munster Motorcycle Club at the former grand prix motocross track on Vernon Mount, Cork, with three races for each class.

In the Grade A MX1 class it was Ballygowan man Gary Gibson leading the way with 72 points after two wins and a second place finish. Comber man Wayne Garrett is in second overall with a first, second and third placed finish taking 67 points at the season opener.

In the Grade A MX2 class Loughbrickland rider Jason Meara is just one point behind the leader, with 64 points following one third and two second place finishes.

Downpatrick’s Christopher Orr lies in third in the Grade B MX1 class on 54 points after taking third, fourth and fifth positions in the three races, while Seaforde man Roy Kennedy has 20 points and lies in 13th position overall.

Ballynahinch rider Terry McCann took 32 points in the Grade C MX1 class and he will go into round two in tenth position overall.

In the Grade C MX2 class two County Down men, who are team mates in the Downpatrick-based 212 Motorsports Team were fighting for the lead.

After round one Downpatrick man Alexander Ellison is in the lead with first, second and fourth place finishes, and Boardmills rider Chris Eccles lies five points behind in second, after second, third and fourth place finishes.

After the event the 212 Motorsports Team Boss, John Bassett said: “Alexander and Chris have been training well. They were told by Roy Kennedy that American riders wear different sets of gear for each race.

“So they had three sets of gear for the three races as apparently it revitalises the body, which means lots of washing at home,” he said.
