Local clubs chalk up double Scor success

DARRAGH Cross and Drumaness picked up awards at the County Down Scór Sinsir finals on Saturday.

Sharlene Neeson, from Darragh Cross, won the recitation/story telling competition for her rendition of Mammy’s Day Out at Tramore, while Drumaness won the leirui competition, taking the audience on a whistle-stop tour of the history of one of Ireland’s most famous music forms.

In the other competitions the ceili dancing winners were the St Peter’s dancers from Warrenpoint; the solo singing was won by Clonduff’s Vivienne Mulcahy; the battle of the ballads was also won by Clonduff; the top instrumental music grip was from Ballyholland; and the set dancing was won by St Peters, from Warrenpoint.

The audience were also entertained by All Ireland Scór na nÓg solo singing champion, Niamh McDowell, from the Glasdrumman club and members from the All Ireland ballad group finalists from Mayobridge. 

William Smith, chairman of the County Cultural Committee, praised the standard of entries across the county and wished all the winning competitors every success in the Ulster semi-final against Donegal, Derry, Tyrone and Cavan on Sunday, March 12, at 5pm in Carrickmore, Co. Tyrone.

The County Down Quiz title will be contested at 8pm on Friday, March 3, in Drumaness GAC and all clubs in Down are invited to enter a team.
