CROSSGAR’S Andrew Waterworth is set to miss the start of the new Irish League season.

The Linfield talisman picked up a bad knee injury in the Champions League qualifier against Celtic in Glasgow at the start of July.

The 31 year-old striker, who scored a hat-trick in the title-clinching victory over Cliftonville in April, was key to David Healy’s side being crowned champions.

Waterworth also bagged another treble the following week to help the Blues defeat Coleraine in the Irish Cup final.

Linfield, who start the campaign at home against Carrick Rangers on August 12, will have to to without the hit man for several weeks.

Healy’s men then travel to face Ards three days later before taking on Dungannon Swifts at Stangmore Park on August 19.

“We are expecting Andy to be out action for several weeks,” said a disappointed Blues boss David Healy.

“It’s not the news we wanted.

“The injury was picked up in the closing stages of the game in Glasgow. Scan results revealed the serious nature of the problem.

“It’s a blow, especially with the league opener only a few weeks away.”
