Library chiefs hold back on opening hours decision

4 January 2012

LIBRARIES NI has revealed it wants more time to consider public responses to controversial pans to reduce opening hours at several local libraries.

A decision on the way forward was expected in December, but has now been deferred until later this month to allow the Board of Libraries NI adequate time to review the high level of responses received during the public consultation.

Over 7,000 questionnaires as well as more than 500 items of correspondence were submitted in response to plans to reduce opening hours as part of a cost-cutting measure drawn up in response to savings required under the so-called comprehensive spending review.

Locally, it is being proposed to reduce the weekly opening hours of Downpatrick library by 13.5 hours, with three hour reductions for both Killyleagh and Saintfield libraries.

No changes in opening hours are proposed

for either Newcastle or Ballynahinch

library.

Mr. Nigel Macartney, interim chairman of Libraries NI, said the Board realises that deferring this decision may add to the uncertainty for some of library users and staff. But he said it’s important that all responses to the consultation are studied carefully.

“We have been overwhelmed by the level of response and it is clear that our customers value both the role that libraries play in local communities and the importance of ensuring that opening hours are such that people can access the wide range of services available when they need them most,” he said.

“it is imperative that the Board has time to review the findings before making such a significant decision and that it has the opportunity to discuss in detail the implications of reducing opening hours with the Department of Culture, Arts and Leisure.”

Mr. Macartney said he has been very impressed by the level of support people have shown for their local library throughout the consultation process and that it’s important the views of everyone are scrutinised.

He added: “The Board of Libraries NI deeply regrets having to consider reducing opening hours in order to meet budgetary requirements and we recognise that reduced opening hours will be very difficult for both our customers and staff.”
