Leslie plunders charity top spot

CROSSGAR Golf club played host to the Uganda Charity Open hosted by Andrew Lennon.

A large field had assembled and with conditions good a competitive event was expected. The players certainly lived up to the billing with fantastic scores.

A plethora of scores in the high 30s were soon eclipsed with several players hitting 40 points.

Ken Watson could have been forgiven for thinking he had done enough when he returned 42 points but almost immediately Gary Kennedy posted the same score and the lead on the best back nine. That score led for most of the day before groundsman Leslie Watson used all his course knowledge to romp to victory with an amazing score of 45 points.

With Leslie taking first prize Adam Withers won the gross and Mel McCarthy claimed the longest drive. Gary Kennedy added to his runner-up prize with the nearest the pin award.

The ladies had a large turnout with quite a few visitors taking the opportunity to play Saturday golf, but it was the Crossgar ladies who came out on top with Mary Torrens claiming second spot and the in-form Jane Baker taking the top prize with a super round of golf.

Visitor Dorothy McMullan did get some consolation winning both the gross and nearest the pin prizes. Her Ardglass colleague, Anne-Marie Perry, won the longest drive prize.

At the presentation later in the evening representatives from the Uganda Charity thanked everyone who helped in any way with over £1,000 raised for a very worthwhile cause.
