Lecale’s swimmers defeat Ballymena

2 April 2014

LECALE Swimming Club’s fourth gala in the Forest Feast AquaSprint League of 2014 was held in Down Leisure Centre.

The Lecale AquaSprint team were hosts to the team from Ballymena Swimming Club. This league is for swimmers aged under 12 and formed into four age groups of boys and girls.

Lecale had won one of their previous three galas in the league, but both defeats were away from home and so they were determined to put in great effort to win in their own pool.

After 20 of the 40 races, Lecale had edged ahead on points. They were showing well in all races and working hard on their finishes, despite giving the touch judges a difficult task.

In the team relays, Lecale won six out of the eight races to emphasise their strength in depth of capable swimmers. The home team pulled steadily away and won on a final points score of 214 to Ballymena’s 186.

The number of swimmers achieving personal bests shows how much effort and determination they put into this gala. This team is developing rapidly as the year progresses and is still in contention with all their rivals.

There have been many close galas between the other teams and no club has a 100 per cent record. The remaining swims in the season are going to be very interesting.

Adam Colgan (U-9) has won in all events so far this season. Cara O’Neill-Campbell (U-9) produced 3 PBs.

In the U-10 group, Ciaran Lundy was first in three races and Ruby Tindall won two races.

The U-11 group saw Daniel Mulholland and Kate McCauley win all four of their individual events.

The closely fought U-12 category saw Philippa Cleave win two races, in both in PBs, and Philip George won two races.

There were also great performances by other members of the team and the following are some of the swimmers who produced PBs on the day: (U-9s) Jack Tindall, Rebekah McNally, Tom Rowlatt-McCormick, Ben Murtagh; (U-10s) Joe Teggart, Mark Molloy, Adam Mahon; (U-11) Jonathan Gray; (U-12) Anna Lundy, Lauren Cox, Ruari Murtagh, Aidan Small

Congratulations to all Lecale swimmers for a great sporting performance in the gala. Lecale’s next gala in the AquaSprints League is away to Ballymoney SC. The team is confident that they will perform at their best and aim for another Lecale win.
