TWO Downpatrick sisters have donated their hair to a children’s cancer charity.

Zara and Zoey Murphy, who are aged six and eight respectively, donated a whopping 30.5 inches of hair between them on Saturday, raising £885 for the The Little Princess Trust.

The girls are pupils at St Colmcille’s Primary School, which has offered to round up the amount to £1,000.

Their mum, Kirsty, explained how the girls’ idea came about.

“A few years ago I started to follow a girl on another platform who had cancer and lost her hair,” she said.

“Zara began to ask questions and I explained about hair loss and wigs. Her reply was ‘Mummy, I’m going to grow my hair and donate it’. That was just over two years ago.”

Mrs Murphy said the girls have been “blown away” by the support received from family members, friends and the wider community.

She added: “We would like to take this opportunity to thank every single person who has donated. We appreciate it so much and know that this will go a long way to help someone in need.”
