Kilmore are marching on

KILMORE Rec’s Irish Cup odyssey is still firmly on track.

The local giant-killers reached the sixth round of the competition after a dramatic victory over Irish Championship side Tobermore yesterday afternoon.

A penalty in the 90th minute by Stephen Douglas earned Kilmore a date with Institute on February 9.

There was little to separate the sides in an even first half with Michael McKenna producing a wonder save in the 22nd minute when Tobermore were dominating.

Philip Traynor, who had a penalty appeal turned down in the 35th minute when he appeared to be upended in the box, went close on a few occasions and Andy Telford also gave the Tobermore custodian plenty to think about in the first 45 minutes.

Kilmore opened the second half on top and Telford was out of luck in front of goal when he really should have done better. Five minutes later, he went close again with another good effort.

Something had to give as Kilmore pounded the home side, but it seemed as if the breakthrough wouldn’t come.

Kilmore stuck to their task and were finally rewarded in the 90th minute when Telford was brought down in the box and Douglas held his nerve with the spot kick.
