Killyleagh pupils wins top award for vision of Titanic

4 April 2012

A KILLYLEAGH Primary School pupil’s vision of the Titanic has been honoured by the Northern Ireland Assembly.

Matthew Lynch was awarded third place in the South Eastern Education and Library Board’s entries into the Northern Ireland Assembly’s Art Competition Awards.

The competition, which was launched in January 2012, called on budding Picassos enrolled in primary schools across Northern Ireland to submit an original drawing or painting based on one of two themes: ‘Remembering the Titanic’ or ‘My World’.

And on Friday 22 pupils from local primary schools gathered in the Great Hall at the Assembly to hear who had been successful among the 2,500 entrants.

Principal Deputy Speaker of the Northern Ireland Assembly, Mr. Francie Molloy MLA, said they were “astounded” by the level of interest in what was the first competition of its kind organised by the Assembly.

“The standard and the level of skill and creativity produced by our local pupils has been beyond compare and certainly made the job of the judging panel very difficult indeed,” he said.
