A KILLYLEAGH sailor has reached the semi-finals of a national competition.
Scott Rodgers is now in within a chance of winning a top prize of £2,000, a commemorative trophy and a bottle of what has been dubbed the world’s best whisky, Old Pulteney 21 Year Old Single Malt.
Scott was nominated by Killyleagh Yacht Club for his outstanding club service and is one of 30 national semi-finalists selected from the many deserving nationwide entries.
The new annual awards scheme was launched in June by Old Pulteney Single Malt Scotch Whisky to reward the outstanding passion, commitment and achievements demonstrated within Britain’s maritime communities, at both a local and national level.
To launch the scheme, Old Pulteney contacted UK sailing clubs asking them to nominate any members they felt deserved recognition within one of the following three categories: Club service, bravery or sailing achievement.
When he was seven, Scott began helping his uncle to start races, after which he learnt to sail.
Since then, he has assisted in race organisations at both club and national levels.
At the age of 15 he gained his RYA Powerboat qualification so he could assist with rescue duties when required.
Two years ago, he qualified as an RYA Instructor and recently became the UK’s youngest RYA regional race officer.
During his many years at the Killyleagh club, Scott has rarely missed sessions or events.
He is always very generous with his time, helping to train junior sailors, oversee the dinghy handicap section of the club’s annual regatta and assist with the running and marketing of other club events.
To reward Scott’s enthusiasm and dedication, Old Pulteney has presented him with a Maritime Heroes Awards certificate and bottle of its award-winning 12 Year Old Single Malt.
He will now be one of the 30 shortlisted sailing stars going through to the competition finals in December.
Margaret Mary Clarke, Old Pulteney’s senior brand manager, said the company was delighted to name Scott as one of its 30 Maritime Heroes.
“Scott’s achievements really stood out from the many fantastic entries we received and we wish him the best of luck in the finals.
“The awards scheme is a great way for Old Pulteney to celebrate the maritime industry’s many unsung heroes and we look forward to announcing our series of winners over the coming months,” she added.
