28 June 2017

A KILLINCHY entrepreneur has been presented with his MBE by the Prince of Wales for his outstanding service to the food industry.

John McCann, managing director of Willowbrook Foods Ltd, has been a strong voice for the agri-food sector in Northern Ireland for over five decades.

Despite being in his 70s, Mr McCann remains at the heart of Willowbrook Foods, which is based in Killinchy and employs over 220 people.

The company had a turnover of over £28m, with 22% growth in the past year, and currently supplies over 70 customers.

Recent developments have included the creation of a purpose-built Innovation Centre where new products are made, while the company recently secured a major international contract with Alpha Catering, supplying 320,000 in-flight meal service to over 130 airlines in 21 countries.

Mr McCann established Willowbrook Foods in 1968 on land farmed by his family for over 200 years.

He said the MBE came during a remarkable year for him and the company, which had secured major international contracts.

“Our business’ success is down to the entire Willowbrook Foods team,” he said.

“Their dedication to producing and supplying fresh, convenient, quality and innovative products really is at the heart of our success.

“I am delighted and humbled to receive this MBE, particularly as I’ve been recognised for doing something that I love.

“The ceremony day was extra special for me because I was able to share it with my wife Janine, and children Steven and Julie — it’s a day we will never forget.”
