Junction concern in Downpatrick

Junction concern in Downpatrick

19 July 2017

ROADS officials have been asked to address an issue at the Irish Street junction with John Street in Downpatrick.

South Down MLA Colin McGrath and councillor John Trainor, who met recently with business owners at this part of the town, believe there is a need for new road markings to facilitate drivers wishing to turn right from Irish Street into John Street.

The area is particularly busy at times, with the politicians suggesting there is a need for Transport NI to take a fresh look at the layout of the junction where a number of additional parking spaces have been provided nearby following the removal of the blast wall at the town’s former police base.

Mr McGrath said in addition to being approached by business community representatives, a number of local people have also been in touch about the junction issue.

“While additional on-street parking is welcome at this part of the town, it is causing some  difficulties the area,” he continued. “The road layout appears to lack a turning arrow at the junction which would assist motorists wishing to proceed along John Street from Irish Street. I believe the provision of such a marking could help improve traffic flow at this part of the town.”

Councillor Trainor said he and Mr McGrath have been listening to local businesses and people who use this junction on a regular basis.

“Traders and local people are keen to see a modest upgrade which they believe would assist traffic flow and business development at this part of the town. We hopeTransport NI will respond to the demand for improvements to be carried out.”
