THE iconic sweep of Murlough beach has been captured in an award-winning image from a budding local photographer.
Jade McCarten, a pupil at Shimna Integrated College in Newcastle, won the secondary school category in the recent One Summer’s Day competition.
Run by the Northern Ireland Tourist Board and the Belfast Telegraph, One Summer’s Day is now in it’s fourth year. Entrants are asked to take a photo on a particular day which reflects what Northern Ireland means to them — from a family day out at a tourist attraction to a walk in the park or a hidden gem in the local area.
Murlough Beach has been a favourite spot of 16 year-old Jade since childhood. The A-level student took this picture after dabbling with her new Canon 550D camera — taking it down to the beach to try out the panorama option, which takes three pictures of the scene and merges them together.
Ruth Burns, of the Northern Ireland Tourist Board, said Jade’s photo really captured the beauty of this much-loved beach.
“Jade’s photo of the Murlough Beach encapsulates the wide flat sandy beach, a view that no doubt many people have many happy memories of,” said Ruth.
“The quantity and quality of entries to the One Summer’s Day competition this year have been fantastic and it was very hard to pick the winners.
“Hundreds of budding photographers snapped scenes all across Northern Ireland including the beaches, festivals, family gatherings, wildlife, attractions and much more, and the pictures offer a stunning collection of photos, creating a photo capsule for Northern Ireland for one day of the summer – June 29.
“We hope it has encouraged everyone to get out and explore what Northern Ireland has to offer. I’d like to congratulate Jade on winning the secondary school category, and also thank everyone who took the time out to enter their photos into this year’s competition and make it another wonderful event.”
