Illegal dumping continuing in district

Illegal dumping continuing in district

6 February 2013

ILLEGAL dumpers have struck again in the district.

Black bins packed with household rubbish were dumped at the Tullykin Road outside Killyleagh last week, with their actions condemned by a local politician.

Councillor Terry Andrews said the issue was drawn to his attention by concerned residents and explained he cannot understand the mindset of people who engage in such behaviour.

He said there are dedicated sites for people to take their rubbish to and argued there is simply no excuse for driving to a secluded area and leaving bags of waste at the side of the road.

“People are taking the trouble to drive to secluded areas to get rid of their waste when it would probably be much easier for them to dispose of their rubbish properly,” councillor Andrews continued.

“Dumping unwanted items in secluded areas places a burden on ratepayers as Down Council has, more often than not, to deploy staff to remove it which costs money.”

Councillor Andrews said reports of illegal dumping and fly-tipping across the district are becoming all too familiar and that it must end.

He said there appears to be a hard core of people who don’t want to dispose of their waste legally which is hitting ratepayers in the pocket.

“Many people are concerned about illegal dumping and it is an issue which needs to be grasped. People are dumping furniture, bags of rubbish and old fridges which is disgraceful,” continued councillor Andrews.

“Rubbish dumped on private land must be removed by the landowner which places a burden on them.”

Councillor Andrews has also appealed to anyone who has information about those engaging in illegal dumping to contact either Down Council of the police.
