Hospices to benefit from charity event

Hospices to benefit from charity event

30 August 2017

TWO local hospices in Northern Ireland will benefit from a successful night at the races organised by a Downpatrick group.

The Lakeside Inn was the venue earlier in the summer for the event that was organised by Stephen and Carmel Murray, from Drumcullan Road, and their friend Brian McGurgan and his family, especially daughter Lesa.

A magnificent total of just over £5000 was raised that will be divided between the Northern Ireland Hospice and Southern Area Hospice.

A clearly delighted Stephen Murray thanked a number of people for helping make this such a successful night.

“Firstly Jeff and Margaret Ferguson of the Lakeside, who kindly allowed use of their premises and were fantastic hosts,” said Stephen. “Also to our race sponsors, anyone who bought horses, and the over 140 people who attended on the night; thank you for your support.

“Finally to Paul of Night at the Races NI who did such a good job of running the evening for us.’

Stephen continued: “I have experience of the services given by the Northern Ireland Hospice. Three years ago, my own mother was in their care.

“As a family we have only positive things to say about the support, positive attitude and level of care my mother received during her illness. This also applies to the support we received following her passing.  So, once again we are delighted to support this wonderful organisation with our fundraising, as well as the Southern Area Hospice, in the work that they both do in our community.’’

Johnny Breen, Community Fundraiser for Northern Ireland Hospice, was keen to thank Stephen and Carmel.

“The amount raised for our two charities is really fantastic. On behalf of Northern Ireland Hospice, I would thank all those who facilitated, organised, and supported what has clearly been a very successful and enjoyable night.

“Stephen and Carmel Murray are valued supporters of NI Hospice, and we very much value the ongoing fundraising they do, often unsung, on our behalf.’

“At Hospice we care for over 3500 babies, children and adults each year. All have life limiting conditions, and it would be impossible to care for them without community involvement, support and funding. Events such as those organised by Stephen, Carmel and Brian are absolutely vital to our work.”
