Heartbreak for Joe Boyle as he is pipped at the post once again

3 March 2017

JOE Boyle’s worst fears have been realised.

Despite fighting to the bitter end in his fifth Assembly election, the Portaferry man has failed to secure the first nationalist seat for the Strangford constituency.

Following a 10-hour contest the fifth seat has been awarded to the DUP’s Peter Weir with over 200 votes to spare.

The SDLP candidate said he felt he had let his community down.

Mr Boyle added: “It was never going to be easy, I never came here with any illusions.

“This is a bastion of Unionism and I am a lone figure, but the Portaferry community was asked to support me and they did – yet I did not deliver the prize I promised.

“I feel like I have let them down.”
