Hayley gets club award for efforts

8 January 2014

THE Loughinisland-based La Lanterne Rouge Cycling Club recently held its AGM.

The proceedings commenced with a presentation by senior member Denis Killen to Hayley Priestley in recognition of her cycling achievements in local, national and international events.

Hayley represented Ireland in the World Junior Track Championships and gained one gold medal, two silvers and one bronze in the All Ireland Track Championships.

La Lanterne Rouge is principally for leisure cycling but welcomes cyclists of all abilities, from relative beginners to racers.

A variety of Sunday routes of differing difficulty and length between 30 to 60 miles are normally undertaken. There are also active midweek road runs and off road MTB.

Last year 20 members and friends travelled to Majorca for a cycling holiday and a similar event is planned for 2014.

A spokesman said: “Perhaps you have just made those New Year resolutions to lose some weight and get fit this year.

“How about starting to cycle? It’s very good for cardio-vascular exercise and does not put stress on leg joints like many other activities.

“This past year the club hosted four charity events raising funds for Daisy Lodge, Mental Health, Marie Curie and Romanian Appeal Helpline. Members also supported charity events run by other clubs across Ireland.”

The club meets every Sunday at 9.30am at Brennans Garage on the Ballynahinch to Clough Road. More details can be found on the club forum at www.lalanternerougecc.com website.

The spokesman added: “We would like to take this opportunity to wish everyone an enjoyable and safe year on the roads.”
