Happy times enjoyed by generations of Scouts

CELEBRATIONS to mark the 60th anniversary of Inch Scouts continue next month with an anniversary weekend camp at Delamont Country Park.

A few weeks ago Inch Parish Church was filled to capacity as members past and present attended an anniversary service and shared fond memories.

They also got the chance to go down a pictorial memory lane at an exhibition of photographs and memorabilia specially put together for the occasion in Inch Parish Church Hall.

Inch Scouts began in 1953 when Mr. Jim Cockfield was asked by the then rector of Inch, the Rev. Michael Roycroft, if he would take on the role of Scout leader.

There had been Scouts at Inch previously under the leadership of Mr. Harold Kempston, but the troop closed when he moved away.

Under the guidance of Mr. Cockfield — known to generations of Scouts as ‘Skipper’ — Inch Scouts went from strength to strength. There are currently 27 Scouts, 20 Cubs and 10 Beavers.

Mr. Cockfield’s son, David, who is the current Scout leader, says Scouting remains as popular as ever with young people.

“Although there have been many changes over the years, the basics remain the same,” he said. “Outdoor activities provide the basis of the weekly programmes.

“Scouting is important in the development of young people and at our recent service it was great to hear all the stories about the adventures and fun that past Scouts had enjoyed during their time at Inch.

“Hopefully, Scouting will continue so that generations to come will also have these experiences.”

Inch Scouts are looking forward to another 60 years.
