Golf event raises over £2,000 for six charities

25 July 2018

SIX local organisations have each been presented with cheques for just over £360 following a recent fundraising golf tournament.

The event at Bright Castle Golf Club was organised by Rowallane councillors Billy Walker and Terry Andrews who have now taken the amount of money they have raised for local charities and good causes over recent years to almost £23,000.

The recent fundraiser at Bright raised £2,166 with the money evenly split between Mainstay DRP, Home Start, Pop Up Art, Newcastle RNLI and the Killyleagh and Crossgar Community Associations.

In the autumn, the local councillors are keen to organise a fundraiser in aid of Cancer Focus Northern Ireland.

The local politicians were delighted with the support they received for the Bright tournament which was graced by brilliant weather as golfers from across the district took part.

A number of local businesses supported the event by sponsoring holes and while Billy and Terry always go head-to-head in their various challenges to see who comes out on top and take each event very seriously, they admit the main thing is to have fun and raise for local charities and other organisations.

“The most important thing for Terry and I is to raise money to give something back to organisations which do tremendous work at the heart of communities across the district,” explained Cllr Walker.

“We continue to be overwhelmed by people’s generosity and are delighted the various events we have organised have raised almost £23,000. This would not simply not be possible without the support of others.”

The Rowallane councillors say they greatly appreciate the work of many individuals and organisations who work quietly away, helping others.

Cllr Walker added: “Thanks to everyone who supported the event at Bright Golf Club. To be able to help six local organisations is fantastic and once again thank you to everyone for their support.”

Cllr Andrews also thanked people who not only supported the recent golf fundraiser, but the various other events he and his Rowallane colleague have organised over recent years.

He added: “Billy and I are lucky in that our role as councillors provides us with an insight into the invaluable work many groups across the district carry out on a daily basis. We enjoy hosting fundraising events as it is our way of giving something back.

“It is humbling to receive so much support for the events we organise to help others and cannot thank people enough. People’s generosity never ceases to amaze us and is quite overwhelming at times.”
