THE oldest woman to receive an award in the 2013 New Years Honours was the guest speaker at Ballynahinch Ladies Probus Club recently.

Mrs. Georgine Dickson, who is 90, was made a Member of the British Empire when the Honours were announced on January 1st. She told the club members of receiving her British Empire Medal at a ceremony at Hillsborough Castle recently.

Georgie has been honoured for her tireless charity work in the local community where she still helps out in the town’s War on Want shop. She started with Arthritis Research, then Cancer Research and still delivers and collects envelopes for these and other charities, as well as going to shops and pubs to collect contributions with boxes.

At the recent meeting she brought along her medal and gave the members a short talk on her day at Hillsborough Castle.

It was Georgie who suggested to the Ballynahinch Probus club that it would be a good idea for them to help to get a ladies Probus established and she was a founder member when the club was formed 12 years ago.
