A BALLYNAHINCH pensioner has turned down 80th birthday presents to raise money for
the Regional Burns Unit at the Royal Victoria Hospital in Belfast.
Earlier this year Gerry McMullan became the victim of a very serious fire in an out office at his home in Glenlough Park. He sustained severe burns to his hands, face and body, spending several weeks in the unit.
Overwhelmed by the continuous support from his neighbours, his friends and his relatives following the incident, he felt the need to acknowledge their kindness and decided to host his upcoming 80th birthday in the Ramery Inn as a thank you.
In his desire to also acknowledge the professional care and attention he received while in the Burns Unit of the Royal Victoria, Gerry suggested donations in lieu of birthday presents which would be forwarded to the unit.
“I just want to express my thanks to the many people and the public services for their help, goodwill and thoughtfulness during my ordeal,” he said. “I have just been overwhelmed by people’s generosity and kindness.”
Supported by Ballynahinch Lions Club, The Ramery Inn and Bailies Mills Accordion band, a donation of £750 was made to the Regional Burns Unit.
