A WOODEN pontoon built at the Quoile River in Downpatrick for the latest Game of Thrones scenes to be filmed in the area will not be torn down when filming ends.
The impressive structure, which features posts snaked with mythical creatures, is being used in filming for the third season of HBO’s hit medieval fantasy series.
Local anglers who watched the pontoon being constructed, recognised it would be a major asset at the Quoile if it could be retained once the production crew leaves.
They contacted local politicians including South Down MP Margaret Ritchie and Chris Hazzard MLA to see what could done to ensure the pontoon remained in place, suggesting it would be ideal for disabled fishermen.
Having listened to the anglers, the politicians raised the issue with Stormont Ministers Alex Attwood and Caral Ní Chuilín.
Yesterday morning, at the request of Miss Ritchie, Mr. Attwood visited the Quoile to see the pontoon and has agreed to retain it, subject to any safety modifications that may be required.
The South Down MP said the structure currently has temporary approval from the Environment Agency and said Mr. Attwood “clearly recognises” the needs of the local community and the benefits this stand would bring to anglers in particular.
“I am delighted the Minister has now agreed to keep this stand, subject to safety modifications, which will bring benefit to all,” said Miss Ritchie.
“I also hope the natural heritage of Down will be used for further film productions as this area has a rich tapestry of heritage and landscape to offer.”
Mr. Hazzard said the Department for Culture, Arts and Leisure (DCAL) intends to enter into discussions with HBO Productions over the future of the wooden pontoon.
“I am delighted the idea of retaining the pontoon has progressed quickly and that DCAL is actively pursuing the interests of local anglers. The Inland Fisheries and Waterways team within DCAL is very keen to enhance and promote the Quoile estuary in the years ahead,” he explained.
Mr. Hazzard added: “I have no doubt that the successful adoption of this pontoon will not only provide fantastic facilities for those anglers with special requirements, but will become a very popular attraction for visitors.”
