Gambia project gift

4 February 2015

DOWNPATRICK Soroptimists have raised £5,000 for the Birthing in Gambia project, which improves the prospects for mothers and their new borns in Africa.

The money was raised through a successful concert at St. Patrick’s Grammar School as part of a busy schedule for the club this year.

Members welcomed Assemblywoman Anna Lo to a recent supper in Denvir’s Hotel where she

gave an overview of her life since she arrived in Northern Ireland in the 1970s with her journalist husband.

She told the group about the culture shock of moving from vibrant Hong Kong to a city deprived of night life and culture due to the Troubles but said she was eventually won over by the beauty of the Irish countryside and made Northern Ireland her home.

Ms. Lo, who is a member of the Alliance Party, also told the group about being persuaded into politics after helping many Chinese people integrate into the community through English  classes and social support.

Maria Duggan presented Ms. Lo with the club’s award-winning Climate Change Leaflet.

The Soroptimists produced the leaflet to raise public awareness about the impacts of climate change and distributed copies to the local council, local schools, libraries and community centres.
