GAA supporters facing criticism for behaviour in Ballynahinch street

A BALLYNAHINCH woman has criticised a number of Down GAA supporters who urinated at Lisburn Street in the town last Sunday morning.

The incident happened just before 10am when a coach and two minibuses stopped in the town. The woman claiming up to 20 people urinated against a wall and at the entrance to a merchant’s yard.

The concerned resident who contacted the Recorder but who did not wish to be identified, believes the supporters were on their way to the Ulster final in Clones.

“What I witnessed was terrible, really disgusting, including a few women vomiting,” she continued, revealing she noted the registration numbers of the three buses and plans to pass these to police.

“If the people who got off the buses had been able to wait for just a few more minutes their vehicles would have been out of the town centre. What they did in the street was disgusting. Some people did use the buses as cover for what they were doing, but a number of others didn’t.”

The woman explained the incident happened close to Ballynahinch Methodist Church and is thankful the Sunday School is closed for the summer as children would have been making their way there at the time the buses stopped.

“I am sure the clubs any of these supporters are members of would not want them to behave in this way. The concerned resident said in her opinion, the supporters who urinated and vomited at Lisburn Street let their clubs and county team down.

She added: “The behaviour of the supporters was really inappropriate. It does not matter what team or sport you follow, what I and others witnessed last Sunday morning is unacceptable.

The GAA’s Down County Board said it did not wish to comment on the resident’s claims.
