Funding boost for Killyleagh church

16 December 2015

SECOND Killyleagh Presbyterian Church has secured a slice of a £400,000 funding cake being made available by the National Churches Trust.

Church officials will use their £20,000 to refurbish and modernise the Frederick Street building and adjoining hall, while still maintaining its traditional characteristics.

The project includes the provision of a brighter and more welcoming entrance, improved kitchen and new units. Toilets are to be upgraded with new disabled provision and hot water geyser. Cash will also be spent tackling damp in the church and adjoining halls.

Almost 30 churches and chapels across the UK will benefit from the latest grants from the National Churches, the church repair and support charity.

Second Killyleagh is located in a conservation area in the centre of what is a plantation village laid out in the early 16th century. The conservation designation document recognised the historic importance and quality of the townscape and highlighted “deserving of special mention is the attractive Second Presbyterian Church designed in Doric classical style with Gothic features.”

The church building was erected in 1840 and this year celebrated its 175th anniversary.
