6 February 2013

A FORMER local rector has been appointed as the new Church of Ireland Bishop of Meath and Kildare.

Archdeacon Leslie Stevenson, who was appointed last week, was rector of Kilmore and Inch parishes from 1987 to 1992.

Archdeacon Stevenson, who is 53, succeeds Archbishop Richard Clarke, who was appointed Church of Ireland primate last year.

He has been rector of Portarlington in Kildare since 1999 and was previously rector of Donaghadee. He and his wife, Ruth, have one daughter.

He has served on a number of Church of Ireland committees and bodies, including the Representative Church Body and the Commission on Ministry.

He said: “I am looking forward to working in a rural diocese which I have come to know so well and to the challenges and opportunities which lie ahead, as well as making a contribution to civic life.”
