ST Colmcille’s High School held its annual Celebration of Achievement afternoon on Wednesday.

The principal, Shane McNeill, welcomed back students who were receiving their GCSE certificates and current pupils who were being rewarded for noteworthy achievements.

He also welcomed guests including parents of students receiving awards, members of the Board of Governors and staff from partner schools.

The guest of honour was a past pupil, Miss Laura Larkin. Laura is a former deputy Head Girl in St Colmcille’s High School and has just graduated with a first class honours degree from the University of Cardiff in midwifery.

Laura spoke of her time at St Colmcille’s High School with great fondness and her inspirational words struck a chord with both students and guests alike.

Laura emphasised the importance of striking the right balance between academic and leisure activities. In the case of the former, Laura highlighted the need to combine excellent attendance with consistent hard work.

Laura presented the awards and certificates to the present generation of successful students at St Colmcille’s High School.

In his closing remarks, Mr McNeill thanked Laura for travelling all the way from Cardiff to be the guest of honour. He spoke directly to the students about how fortunate they were to have such an outstanding role model from whom to draw inspiration.

He also commented that Laura acknowledged the parental support that students receive and how they work in partnership with the school to ensure that there is the opportunity for all our young people to achieve success and develop into the leaders of their generation.
